Change of status for the monarch butterfly

Big changes are on the horizon for monarch butterfly conservation: the Government of Canada is considering listing the monarch butterfly as an endangered species!

On May 13, 2023, a proposed Order to amend Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act (SARA) was published in the Canada Gazette, to bring monarch from its current status of Special Concern to Endangered. The government will hold a 30-day consultation (until June 12, 2023) on the proposal and all Canadians are invited to submit their comments.

Moving from endangered to endangered status will better protect the monarch. It also triggers the obligation to plan the recovery of the species to address threats to its survival or recovery. This includes identifying its critical habitat, based on the best information available.
